"Meet the Mushers" Dinner
Pre-race activities begin at 6 pm in the Lakeside Pavilion on Friday, February 1 with a "Meet the Mushers" dinner that is open to the public. A pre-race musher's meeting will follow with bib numbers assigned and instructions from race officials handed out. Following this meeting, mushers will have their teams inspected and approved by the race veterinarian who will ensure that all teams are in good health.

Brownstone Trail Candlelight Tour
Candlelight Hike/ Ski/ Snowshoe on the Brownstone Trail (depends on trail conditions). Meet at the parking lot adjacent to the DNR office in Bayfield at 6:30 p.m. for a guided Brownstone Trail outing by candlelight. Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race

"The Connective Power of Place" - Bayfield Carnegie Library
Friends of the Library presents the 2008 Cabin Fever Series. “The Connective Power of Place” is an illustrated account of a personal relationship with the Bayfield and Lake Superior region. Over the past 30 years, Don Albrecht has lived in, photographed, and thought about the place he calls home. His photographs are meant to illuminate the significance of place in his life. Don Albrecht’s personal work focuses on black and white art photographs of people using a toy camera as well as a medium format film camera. An assistant professor of art at Northland College, he received his MFA degree in Rockport, Maine, an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Superior, and a B.A. in Humanities from Michigan State University. He has had exhibitions throughout the region and also in Japan and Cuba and has lived in Bayfield for 34 years. As preparation for a new curriculum at Northland, Albrecht circumnavigated Lake Superior (by car) in 2006 and 2007. Coffee & Cookies 6:15 Show 6:30pm.

"Adventures in Southeast Asia"
Friends of the Library presents the 2008 Cabin Fever Series. “Adventures in Southeast Asia” - Tom and Madeline Hart will present slides and stories from their adventure travels in southeast Asia, including Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia. The Harts taught in an international school in Taiwan ROC from 1999-2002. During school holidays they travelled in SE Asia. By bicycle in Laos along the Mekong river, on foot among the Karen people between Burma and Thailand, on busses and a boat in VietNam they sought the less travelled but more intimate roads. They ended up singing a solo for an entire village’s new year celebration, putting on a puppet show in an AIDS orphanage in Cambodia and being scolded in front of HoChiMin’s embalmed body in Hanoi. They will share stories and slides from their adventure. Coffee & Cookies 6:15 – Show 6:30pm.

Apple Blossom Run
Apple Blossom Run The run was started in 1981 by volunteers from the Friends of the Bayfield Library. Saturday May 17, 2008 will mark the run’s 27th year! It is a fundraiser for the Bayfield Carnegie Library. Timed races wind through the scenic orchard area. All races begin at the Bayfield Apple Co. gazebo, on the corner of Cty J & Betzold Road. The 2-mile Fun Run finishes at the gazebo. The 10K Run and 10K Walk finish in Bayfield, across from the library.

Blessing of the Fleet
History comes to life with the traditional Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony on Sunday, June 15th.Starting at 12:00 Noon, the Sons of the Voyageurs perform at the Gazebo in Memorial Park. Dressed like authentic voyageurs, they sing traditional logging and sailing songs in 3 part harmony and present information on the lifestyles of the voyaguers and the fur trade era. Then, local clergy join together for an ecumenical ceremony in the park to honor the fishing families of the past and present and to acknowledge the role of Lake Superior in the lives of area boaters.
